The National Union of Campus Journalists wishes to call on campus journalists from various tertiary institutions in Nigeria to register for the first phase of her capacity building training webinar.
Recall that the Union recently launched the commencement of her serial capacity building training which is aimed at exposing her members to current trends in journalism and equip them with skills and capacities to contribute to improving the society and in preparation for newsroom practice.
The first phase of the training which will run for 2-days is centred on Media Law and Human Rights is themed “The Role of Campus Journalists in Safeguarding Media Law and Human rights in Nigeria.”
The training wishes to expose campus journalists to how the media can make people aware of their rights, expose its violations and focus attention on people and areas in need of the protection of human rights and pursue their case till they achieve them.
It will feature three (3) seasoned panelists: Osai Ojigo, Country Director of Amnesty International; Kolawole Oludare, Deputy Director of SERAP and Inibehe Effiong, Head of Chamber, Effiong Chamber who will be facilitating discussion on how the media can bring light to the issues concerning human rights in our society, enlighten the public, prevent human rights violation through fair reportage and encourage human rights activists and organizations and stirs any other actions that can promote human rights.
The training wishes to address challenges mitigating human rights in Nigeria. Regrettably, people are usually subjected to physical and mental torture. The training wishes to address cases of accidental discharges, domestic violence, detention without trial, kidnappings, and police brutality, and other deviant activities eroding fundamental human rights.
With the support from her partners, the Union will provide data support for 100 campus journalists selected for the training.
