The National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ) holds in esteem, the capacity development of her members, as we believe that journalism is a function of knowledge, skills and experience.
It is on this note that we announce the launch of specialized training in various but specific areas of journalism, for our members across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
The training, which run from July - December, 2021, will focus on issues including media law and ethics, human rights, data and visualization, health, climate and energy, solutions and development journalism. It will hold on Zoom, with a livestream on our the NUCJ Facebook page. NUCJ through support from its partners, will also provide data support to enable members participate in the
sessions.
The purpose of the project is to expose student journalists to current trends, equip them with skills and capacities to contribute to improving society and in preparation for professional newsroom practice.
The training is being open to our members – over 10,000 drawn from 68
chapters/institutions in Nigeria, with a projected estimate of about 6,000 participants.
Samuel Ajala, the NUCJ President, said the project will ”expose campus
journalists to the coverage of issues concerning human rights, data and visualization, health, climate and energy, solutions and development journalism.”
“The training sessions will be facilitated by seasoned journalists and experts in
these selected areas of focus.
“To cushion the high cost of data, we will be providing over 500 student journalists
with data support. We thank all our partners for their support towards this project.
We are open to more partnerships to provide data support to enable more persons
participate in the training,” he said.
The project is supported by Premium Times Center for Investigative Journalism
(PTCIJ), Amnesty International Nigeria and the African Center for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL).
