The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nasiru Musa Yauri stated this in his speech at the first Press Summit organised by the AUKPress to commemorate 5 years of establishment in the University.
The Vice-Chancellor represented by the Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. Samaila Lawal Mara commended the efforts of the AUKPress in reporting campus activities of students and pledged to support the media outlet in carrying out its activities without hitches.
The Summit which took place at Muhammad Sanusi ICT Hall of the University on Saturday 12th November 2022, was chaired by a veteran journalist, an Icon of information management, Alhaji Aliyu Garba Kankara.
Alhaji Aliyu G. Kankara spoke passionately about the crucial role of the media in the society, describing the media as an agent of progress, development and enlightenment of the citizenry.
Represented by a former Director, National Orientation Agency, Alhaji Rabi’u Gambo Bakori, Alhaji Aliyu G. Kankara said campus journalism should strive to inform students on issues that would make their stay in the university very rewarding and successful.
He cautioned the AUKPress against fake information and its consequences on their credibility, among them defamation, aiding and abetting the spread of false perception, creating mistrust and societal unrest.
In a paper titled ‘’Development of Campus Journalism’’, the Head of the Public Affairs, Akilu A. Abubakar traced the history of campus journalism to the 1900s, explaining further that with the penetration of the internet in the last ten years in Nigeria, online media outlets have flooded the social media space and to which campus journalism has cashed into the situation, sending information to a large percentage of students population.
He said the AUKPress has been an excellent partner in the enormous task of information dissemination, bringing news, interviews and picturesto the door step ofthe students of the University.
In his welcomeaddress, Deputy Chairman of the AUKPress, Muhammad Alhaji Usman said the summit was organised to enlighten students of the University on the importance and significance of campus journalism and the achievements of the AUKPress, 5years after establishment.
