NUCJ visits NUJ, Secures Support for Projects
The National Executive Council of the National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), Wednesday, visited the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at its National Secretariat in Abuja.
The NUCJ delegation led by its President, Samuel Ajala, was received by the NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo and other executive officers of the NUJ.
Being its first visit since inauguration, Ajala formally introduced the new NUCJ executive council to the NUJ. He presented the structure, scorecard, projects and plans of the union, while seeking collaborative measures between both unions.
Ajala also stressed the need for support with capacity building and mentorship in nurturing the
next generation of
journalists, with strong considerations
for ethics and public
trust – in order to secure the future of journalism in Nigeria.
The NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo commended the efforts of the NUCJ
in promoting
good journalism on Nigerian
campuses. Isiguzo noted that
as
young
people and members
of the fourth estate, campus
journalists hold an essential
responsibility of safeguarding
democracy
and promoting nation-building.
“Newsrooms and media
organizations including
campus journalists, have roles to play in saving our crumbling democracy. This is
because
the society has reposed their confidence in the media; and if the media fails today, Nigeria
fails. If the media fails, democracy fails, because
it is the only the media that is sustaining Nigeria's democracy today,” he said.
Isiguzo said that the future of journalism in Nigeria rested on the shoulders of the next generation and as such stressed the need for mentorship and trainings for campus journalists
to develop capacity to confront emerging trends and challenges.
He assured the commitment of the NUJ to partner and support the NUCJ in its plans and programmes. He also approved the adoption of the NUCJ as an affiliate of the NUJ, as well as
setting up a contact desk for the union at the NUJ Secretariat.
Addressing the worsening state of insecurity in the country and its impact on the society, especially the recent spate of kidnapping and banditry, the NUJ President called on citizens to play their role in supporting ongoing efforts in maintaining national order and stability.
"Government has not completely failed, but for government to succeed, all of us must make our
contributions. Intelligence gathering is a collective responsibility," he said.
The NUCJ President thanked the leadership of the NUJ for its support and promised to continue its efforts at upholding democracy and supporting nation-building through journalism
and other activities.
